Big Boi comes through with long awaited solo effort.
The impressive surge of music continues…
Chalk-up to this year’s classics Big Boi’s Sir Lucious Leftfoot: The Son of Chico Dusty. When I spoke to Big Boi earlier this year about his upcoming release the conversation centered around his intent to bring back the funk in Hip-Hop. He labelled himself, “The Funk Crusader.”
As 1/2 of the legendary duo Outkast; it always seemed that Big Boi lived under Andre 3000′s shadow in the mainstream arena, but ask any Hip-Hop purist and he/she is bound to mention Antwan Patton’s lyric ability up there with the all-time best.
With the group’s release of the diamond selling Speakerboxx/The Love Below one could see the different directions each artist was taking musically. Patton went the route of funk, and that is what he is serving up again with Sir Lucious Left Foot.
The album transitions from one song into the next seamlessly. Each beat has a bit of everything going on providing Patton rich canvasses to add his sped-up/slowed down delivery that’s contagious.
The album’s lyrical content focuses a lot on the rapper’s take on what has happened to Hip-Hop while he was gone. Despite his takes on different topics, his verses you never get a sense that Big Boi is outdated. He’s as fresh as he was when he debuted on the scene.
This is bold music. It brings back the funk sound with modern influence. The two year wait for this album was worth it.
Props, Mr. Patton.
