The Cool Kids live up to their name.
Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish make up the Indie Hip-Hop duo The Cool Kids. If you haven’t heard of them yet, you should definitely pay some attention. They have self-described themselves as, “The new black version of the Beastie Boys.” Rocks and Inglish have released a slew of mixtapes with their latest effort, Tacklebox reinforcing their motto of laid back flows, simple beats, and being cool.
The group reminds me more of Eric B. & Rakim. They’re so fluid in their deliveries; it’s easy to see the resemblance. Tacklebox’s subject matters include partying, women, weed, and a taking-it-easy attitude. In that sense The Cool Kids are adequately named. The mixtape is a compilation of summer bangers and is prompted to build the group’s credibility and popularity. It is easily their best work to date.
One of the reasons I like The Cool Kids is because they are complex but simplistic. They don’t force their rhymes, and every beat is fusion of heavy bass and soothing melody but it manages to be introspective. They don’t sound like anything else that’s out now. While their beats are simple they don’t sound amateur. Their rhyming cohesion is seamless and truly invokes memories of Eric B. & Rakim.Their music is good for kicking it and for parties. Cool.
